The edges of the tapes are tied off to prevent fraying during handling or use. A carbon fiber tape with a plain weave refers to a tape in which the carbon fibers are woven in a classic plain weave structure. In this weave, warp and weft threads cross alternately — one over, one under — resulting in a uniform, dense, and easily formable fabric or tape.
The weave of the tape determines the fiber orientation and its mechanical behavior. In UD (unidirectional) tapes, all carbon fibers run in the same direction along the length of the tape. These tapes feature light stitching that holds the fibers in place across the width without affecting the laminate’s strength. In biaxial tapes, the carbon fibers are arranged in two layers at ±45 degrees relative to the lengthwise direction. This structure provides improved torsional stiffness and multidirectional strength.
Carbon fiber tapes are suitable for reinforcing both thermoset and thermoplastic materials and are specifically chosen when an excellent strength-to-weight ratio is desired. Their light weight, high tensile strength, and stiffness make them an ideal material for technical and demanding composite structures.
